The M1850 Foot Officer's Sword was carried by the rank of Lieutenant through Captain.  Once the rank of Major was attained, the M1850 Staff & Field Officer's sword was used.  This model, like the Staff & Field Officer's sword was copied from the French M1845 infantry sword.
